写真展「ヤングマハラジャ／本多元」開催にあたって
本多さんと仕事を通じてお付き合いするようになってもう７、8年になる。誠実な人柄だし、仕事もきちんとこなしてくれるので、全面的な信頼を置いている。ライターと写真家は補完しあう職業だと思うが、本多さんはまさに写真家としての皮膚感覚・直感に忠実な人で、現場で一緒に動いているとき、僕が見えていない部分をしっかり見据えていて、いつも心強く思う。
今回の写真展について、会場に飾るための文章を依頼されたとき、僕は即座に輪郭を思い描いた。宗教心と豪奢な暮らしぶりという「ギャップ」、または路上生活している貧乏な人々と豪奢な彼らの「落差」を強調するような書き方にしようと。しかし、本人から直接、写真を見せてもらい、そうした書き方ではそぐわないことがわかり、一瞬頭を抱えた。持ってきてもらった写真が、インドの大金持ちの豪奢な暮らしを描いたものばかりだったからだ。
同時にその場で志向している表現のあり方について説明を受け、なるほどと膝を打った。本多さんはドキュメントを志向していない。それどころか、そうした視点から首尾一貫して離れようとしている、というのだ。彼は写真がどのように見られるのか頓着しない。今回の写真が、インドではなくアフリカの金持ち、または、日本の金持ちのコスプレ集団の写真だと観覧者が見なしてもいっこうに気にしないはずだ。彼が何を写したのか、表現したいのか、ということは考えても考えなくてもいい。被写体すべてを匿名のまま、その視覚イメージのみから感じても良い。被写体から「ギャップ」や「落差」にインドの有り様を実感しても良い。どんな見方をしてもそれは正解なのだ。
ひとつだけ例外がある。匿名ではなく、何者なのかを知っておいた方が楽しめる被写体、それは展示の最後の方に登場する10才の御曹司だ。この坊やについては注視しておいた方が面白い。お腹が出て年の割にはずいぶんふてぶてしい印象の彼こそがこの富豪一家の次代を担う人物で、彼はすでに会社のパンフレットに「彼が跡継ぎですよ」とアナウンスする写真が掲載されているというのだ。この一族の世襲制の徹底ぶりは日本企業の同族経営はもちろん北朝鮮の独裁体制ですら、足元にも及ばない。だが不思議と陰湿さはないし、世襲こそが自然な成り行きだと思えてしまう。

ヤングマハラジャによせて
私にとってインドは、昔から人種、宗教、文化、と多様性に富んでいて1度は行ってみたい憧れの国の代表格でした。
このたび私の父が以前仕事でお付き合いのあった今は亡きナリマン・カトガラ氏の息子のサイラスさんに招待されて、
はじめてこの地を訪れる機会を得ることができました。短い滞在ではありましたが、
とても刺激的で興味深い体験をさせていただきました。ここで少しカトガラ家の話をさせていただきます。
インドでは少数のパールシー族です。（インド二大財閥の一つTATAも同様です）
そして100年以上の歴史をもつインド最大のロジスティックス会社と旅行会社を経営する一族です。
最近はBRICsでも話題のようにインドの目覚ましい経済発展もあって更なる躍進を続けているようです。
世界中に点在しているカトガラ家の親族は代々家訓で月に1度は必ず家族会議（経営会議）のため集まるそうです。
その揺るぎない結束が必要なのも、インドのみならず世界の厳しいビジネスに立ち向かい
そして力強く生き抜くための叡智なのかもしれません。
そんなカトガラ家の華麗なるビジネスとライフスタイルを中心に出会った人々、風景などを思いのままにシャッターを押しました。
最後にこれらの写真を撮らせて頂いたサイラス・カトガラさん、いつも優しくお世話をしてくれた奥様のファリーダさん、
ボンベイの本家の皆様、心よりお礼申し上げます。

About- Young Maharaja signed by Hajime Honda
India has been one of the most dreaming countries with full of wealthy variety of culture, creed, and races, I always had a desire to visit India once in my life when ever I get an opportunity.
My dream came factual when recently I got an opportunity to visit India this year. I was invited by one of my fathers close business associate late Mr.Nariman Katgara’s son Mr.Cyrus Katgara, at their apartment in Gurgaon, part of the National Capital Region.
Though my stay in India was of a short duration, still I had very remarkable experience, during my short and sweet tenure.
I would love to share my experience, as well as the generous hospitality, of the Katgara Family and their long tenure in business, which now enters 107 years.
The family itself is called there as Parsi as they originally migrated from Persia approximately 400 years ago. (The famous and largest industrial house in India known as TATA group is also Parsi ownership).
Jeena & Company, India's oldest freight forwarding concern established in 1900 by Mr. Pallanji Katgara. They were the first NON-BRITISH CARGO & TRAVEL established in India. The success of Jeena & Company is mainly due to the vision and Philosophy of its founders, PALLONJI AND JEHANGIRJI.
Their Motto which has always been “TO GIVE SATISFACTION TO YOUR CUSTOMERS”. It is even more relevant in today’s competitive world.
Today a century later, they are known all across the Globe for their Professional Services.

India has arrived as the most favored Investment destination of the world.
By 2020 India’s gross national product is likely to overtake or be on the threshold of over taking Europe. Home to nearly two-fifth of humanity, two neighboring countries, India & China, are two of the world’s fastest growing economics. Everybody realizes India as a developing country and has been achieving dynamic economy- growth among the BRICS countries.
I had shot so many pictures of the family reflecting their magnificent life-style as well as their business approach and pictures against the landscapes wherever I was pleased to shoot.
I am grateful to all of you who are here at the gallery sharing my first experience in India.
